Albania has not been a great travel destiantion for travel
in Europe. Albania is a land with a rich heritage, and even if it doesn't
seem to be one of Europe's finest
tourist spot at the moment, it could certainly emerge as one in years
to come. It is a Mediterranean country in southeastern Europe, bordered by
Montenegro and Serbia
(Kosovo) in the north-east, the Republic
of Macedonia in the east, and Greece
in the south, has a coast on the Adriatic Sea in the west, and a coast on
the Ionian Sea in the southwest. The country is an emerging democracy and
is formally named the Republic of Albania. More recently, Albania gained international
attention as the breeding ground for the Kosovo Liberation Army and the staging
post for NATO forces who deployed into Kosovo during the massive bombing campaign
over Yugoslavia. Since then the journalists have disappeared, tourism and
traveling in Albnia has
reduced and has along with the stories that brought them there.
The country has witnessed many vicissitudes in its eventful history-from
fleeing refugees and blood vendettas, to years of dictatorial rule. Yet, Albania
manages to offer tourists the traditional Mediterranean charm and a heady
blend of different religions, cultures and landscapes. But Albania is not
without its charm, even if those living there want to get out: forest-covered
mountains and a long coastline along the Adriatic Sea are underscored by a
distinctively Mediterranean feel. Cities like Tirana, Durrės and Shkodra date
back as far as 500 BC;
